PHArA-ON: Unlocking potential – navigating exploitation pathways for lasting impact

The PHArA-ON ecosystem, comprising diverse actors in the health and care sector, functions as multiple interconnected ecosystems. Its advanced technologies create a multifaceted value network that cannot be viewed one-dimensionally. To address this complexity and support solution providers, different exploitation pathways were examined, ensuring sustainable impact beyond the project’s conclusion.

At the core of the PHArA-ON project lies its capacity not only to innovate, but also to exploit its outcomes effectively. Central to this endeavour are the exploitation pathways, which serve as guiding frameworks for pilots in Andalusia, Murcia, Netherlands, Portugal, Slovenia, and Italy, enabling them to leverage the project’s outcomes across a diverse spectrum of solutions, spanning innovative patient monitoring, social engagement, cognitive stimulation, and advanced analytics.

Based on the theoretical foundations of business ecosystems, and acknowledging the diversity of solutions and range of Technology Readiness Levels (TRLs), a variety of exploitation pathways were identified. Tailored to the unique needs and contexts of the PHArA-ON pilots, these pathways encompass a wide array of opportunities, including:

  • Follow-up Financing: the goal is to obtain further financing to cover costs of new equipment, maintenance, implementation, and development of the solution through public financing and short to medium financial frameworks with the aim of achieving market-readiness.
  • Sales: the goal is to generate Business to Business (B2B), Business to Consumer (B2C) or Business to Government (B2G) sales with a recurring or a one-time payment option, establishing a medium-term revenue stream to cover costs of maintenance, further development and expansion of the solution.
  • Investors: the goal is to grow a for-profit business through the involvement of private or public investors at the initial stages of the company to boost the development, marketing, scaling-up and infrastructure by establishing a long-term relationship with investors.
  • Research Funding: the goal is to secure funding from research grants, public institutions, or private foundations to cover costs for testing, studies, and exploring new markets, enhancing the solution’s readiness level.

Structured approach

A structured approach was followed not only to identify the most suitable exploitation pathways for each pilot, but also to capture the main insights from their innovations for exploitation. To further empower pilots in their journey, comprehensive pitch deck templates were provided, equipping them with the tools to articulate their ideas persuasively to target audiences. This preparatory phase was vital for sharpening pitching skills and deepen the understanding of the diverse channels available for advancing their solutions.

Collaborative learning

Throughout this phase, collaborative sessions were conducted, bringing together all pilots to present their results, provide mutual feedback for improvement, and practice potential questions from audiences when presenting their ideas. By actively engaging in this collaborative process, pilots gained valuable feedback, refined their strategies, and enhanced their presentation skills, ultimately strengthening the collective knowledge base of the PHArA-ON project.

Stakeholder engagement and partnerships

As the pilots delved into practical implementation, they actively explored opportunities through participation in events, engagement with key contacts, and targeted calls. Through these outreach efforts and collaboration with industry stakeholders, policymakers, and advocacy groups, pilots endeavoured to scale their solutions and drive change in the health and care sector for older adults. By fostering meaningful partnerships and leveraging collective resources, pilots could accelerate the adoption of their innovations and foster the lasting PHArA-ON positive change in communities across Europe.

Insights collection and reporting

As pilots have been gradually guided through each phase, they have also constantly reported on their progress. Each step has been documented, capturing actions and outcomes. This rigorous approach to reporting and collecting insights enabled them to identify improvements, evaluate the effectiveness of their strategies, and inform future decision-making processes. Ultimately, this iterative process allows for adaptation as the project progresses, maximizing the impact and sustainability of PHArA-ON project outcomes.
